About TBG
Founded in 1986, TBG has earned its reputation and award-winning recognition for unconditional dedication to the art of acting. Originally founded and operated out of a railroad flat on Barrow Street, TBG has grown into a mid-size theatre organization providing inspiration and resources to the entire arts community of NYC. With the TBG Arts Center and The Barrow Group School, we serve as an artistic home for some of New York’s finest actors, directors, playwrights, filmmakers, designers, and visual artists.
TBG received a 2005 Drama Desk Nomination for BEST PLAY for Tony Award-Winning David Edgar’s Pentecost. TBG developed Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk With Me, winner of the 2009 Nightlife Award for Outstanding Comedian in a Major Engagement and Lucille Lortel Award Nominee for BEST SOLO SHOW and Martin Moran’s The Tricky Part in 2004 (Drama Desk nominations for Best Play and Best Solo Show and an OBIE Award). In 1995 The Barrow Group received a Drama Desk Award for Off-Off Broadway Excellence.
Over its history, TBG has earned the support of the JKW Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Senator Tom Duane, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, The Dramatists Guild, the Jewish Communal Fund, the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment of the Arts, and the American Theatre Wing. Our many active supporters have also included Terrence McNally, Lanford Wilson, Craig Lucas and Ann Reinking.
The Barrow Group’s programming and services include:
Main Stage Productions are fully realized off-Broadway productions of plays and musicals that have risen through the ranks of the Play Development Program. These Productions typically receive open-ended runs in The Barrow Group’s 99-seat theatre.
Play Development is an important aspect of The Barrow Group’s programming. TBG regularly gives new plays and revivals public readings and workshops. This provides a forum for works-in-progress to be presented to audiences for evaluation before going into production.
The Barrow Group School offers professional and emerging artists training in Scene Study, Script Analysis, Playwriting, Directing, and Film and Television Acting Technique. Work/study and apprentice programs are available for students of merit. At the heart of The Barrow Group School is the desire to promote clear and concise tools of the trade. These tools have been outlined and published in An Actor’s Companion - 99 Bits of Craft by Seth Barrish (TBG’s founder and co-artistic director).
