Acting for Film and TV

This six-week on-camera course focuses on film and television scripts and specific tools used in the medium. This workshop highlights quick and powerful ways to make your performance more natural and spontaneous. Limited class size allows for significant feedback and on-camera work.

Scene Study Intensive 1

This 12-week course is the class most actors take when they find The Barrow Group. This is not a beginning acting class, rather the course is designed to build on the actor's existing set of skills and take training to the next level. Over the course of 12 weeks, the actor is introduced to the simple, effective tools compiled in Seth Barrish's book An Actor's Companion - 99 Bits of Craft.

Scene Study Intensive 2

This follow-up 12-week course to Intensive 1 encourages actors to practice the art of self-diagnosis. Participants will begin to evaluate their own work, with the guidance of TBG’s Artistic Directors and make adjustments as needed. The goal of the course is to foster independency. This course will prepare actors for the “on-the-job” challenges, so that they can perform better and maximize their potential even in the worst of situations. Students will utilize the tools they were introduced to in Intensive 1 and learn many new ones as well.

Advanced Scene Study

This 12-week course is by invitation only. Upon completion of both Scene Study Intensives, students may be invited to join the Advanced Scene Study class. Here, the members of The Barrow Group acting community, gather to continue their development in this "acting gym class." The team of teachers will help the actors shape their performances while sharing specific bits of craft and receiving specific direction. This environment has a decided emphasis on script analysis and its application to scene work.

NEW - Clowning

Looking to add a new skill set to your acting resume? This six-week course will teach you the basics of clowning.

NEW - Teen Workshop

This 10-week course is for teens ages 13-16. The actor is introduced to the simple, effective tools compiled in Seth Barrish's book An Actor's Companion - 99 Bits of Craft. Limited class size allows for significant feedback.

NEW - Beginner's Acting

This 12-week class is designed for the beginning actor, and will teach you the fundamentals of the craft. The class highlights quick and powerful ways to make your performance more natural and spontaneous. A great start for the beginning actor!

Director's Workshop

A comprehensive 11-week course on directing for the stage taught by award-winning director, Seth Barrish. Participating directors work with actors throughout the entire course and learn techniques on how to communicate with actors and evoke natural, spontaneous performances. Directors focus on detailed scene work as well as the practical and technical aspects of directing. Directors should email their resume to school@barrowgroup.org to be considered for this Master Class. Actors for the Directing Workshop should submit their headshot and resume and be prepared to audition for the Directors on the first day of class. Please prepare a brief contemporary monologue for the audition. Actors are introduced to The Barrow Group acting tools, as well as Script Analysis and Directing techniques. This class is ideal for those actors who want to get to know TBG techniques, and want to save a little cash!

Monologue

This 10-week course offers practical tools for preparing audition monologues. Class work concentrates on tricks to relax you, helping you focus more on storytelling. Co-Artistic Director Lee Brock will help you put together a repertoire of monologues for any audition.

Script Analysis

This is a 6-week course taught by Seth Barrish. Here you will learn how to get more from reading a script, so that you can tell the story better. Your enhanced understanding of the script will improve your performance. It is a great course for directors and designers too. You will explore specific techniques that allow you to decipher inciting events, main events, hot circumstances, calls to action and all the particulars that make storytelling powerful and clear. The course begins with an introduction to the approach, followed by in-depth analysis of several scenes each week. Each week, participants will bring in scenes, read them and then engage in facilitated group discussions.

Musical Theater

This 6-week course is taught by Lee Brock. She helps singers tell the story of a song more effectively. In class, participants perform their songs with an in-house accompanist. Lee utilizes Barrow Group tools to free up the performer and lead them towards more simple and relaxed expression. The tools will increase your expressiveness, clarify your story telling, and increase your vulnerability as well. Participants perform different songs each week.

Solo Show Workshop

Ever wanted to write your own Solo Show? This 12-week course, taught by Seth Barrish (director of solo shows including Martin Moran’s The Tricky Part and Mike Birbiglia’s Sleepwalk With Me) focuses on storytelling and writing and producing your own show.

Shakespeare

This 6-week course, taught by Seth Barrish, applies The Barrow Group techniques to Shakespeare. Here you will learn specific tools and tricks that lead to greater understanding of the text and much greater clarity in your performances. The first part of the course will be dedicated to monologue work and the second half will focus on scenes. Seth’s common sense approach makes Shakespeare surprisingly accessible.
